On June 25, 2024, the Born to Bmore Foundation, in collaboration with Ballin Mentors, hosted the highly anticipated Book and a Ball basketball development camp. This event, held at Golden Ring Park, emphasized the significance of balancing education and sports, aiming to equip young athletes with essential life skills. The camp was a tremendous success, providing participants with an enriching experience that underscored the importance of using both books and basketball as tools for life.

A Day of Learning and Playing

The Book and a Ball camp kicked off with a warm welcome from Bee Smith Jr., the visionary behind the Born to Bmore Foundation. He highlighted the camp’s mission: to encourage young athletes to excel not only on the court but also in the classroom. The day’s activities were designed to reflect this mission, with sessions alternating between basketball drills and reading exercises.

Basketball Drills

The basketball sessions were led by experienced coaches who focused on fundamental skills such as dribbling, shooting, and teamwork. The young athletes participated in various drills that challenged them to improve their technique and coordination. The highlight of the day was a friendly scrimmage where campers could apply what they had learned in a game setting. The energy was electric, with cheers and high-fives all around as players showcased their skills.

Reading Sessions

Interspersed between the basketball drills were engaging reading sessions. Volunteers and mentors from Ballin Mentors led these sessions, encouraging campers to explore different books and develop a love for reading. The sessions included interactive discussions and storytelling, making reading a fun and enjoyable experience for the participants. Each camper received a book to take home, reinforcing the camp’s message about the importance of education.

Building Life Skills

The core message of the Book and a Ball camp was to use both education and sports as tools in life. Bee Smith Jr. and the coaches emphasized that success on the court and in life requires discipline, hard work, and continuous learning. By integrating basketball drills with reading sessions, the camp provided a holistic approach to youth development.

Empowering the Next Generation

The success of the Book and a Ball camp was evident in the smiles and enthusiasm of the participants. Parents and guardians expressed their gratitude for an event that focused on their children’s overall development. The camp not only improved the campers’ basketball skills but also instilled a love for reading and learning.
